Gears And World of Goo HD

Gears

£1.49

Keep those repair spheres rolling (or, erm, we'll all die)   things could be worse if Gears is anything to go by. In the game, the population has ravaged the planet and set up home in a shiny floating city. Sadly, whoever was entrusted with designing said haven was an eccentric buffoon, Rather than powering it by, say, nice solar panels, its mechanisms involve huge gears located in perilous places. Cue earthquakes, machinery damage and a lot of panic.

Of course, instead of being able to repair everything by flicking open a hatch and fiddling with a screwdriver, the inhabitants have to rely on a repair sphere

Its job is to trundle around engines, grab power gears and deposit them in collection funnels. Gears isn't an easy game, as you try to coax the sphere around each level grabbing gears and reaching the exit, The tilt controls are too sensitive, but the swipe ones are better, enabling you to use subtle flicks to move the sphere short distances, and large ones to fling it into the air. Also, read this: www.jaxov.com/2010/02/how-to-hard-reset-your-iphone-or-ipod-touch

The problem is that the 3D landscape is often not terribly obvious, resulting in the sphere plunging to its doom time and again. Coupled with controls that aren't quite tight enough and levels that require more precision than is on offer, Gears is often frustrating once you've passed the first few levels, and especially when you're trying to get through the Rivers of Magma and maze-like Cavern of Onrtens.

Even the standard difficulry level has an insanely tight time limit, which can be turned off if you decide to wuss out and opt for the easy mode. At every point, you'll also be thinking the game should be a bit more fun; the intro movie, soundtrack and setting try to be magical, but the Dark Nebula ganrtes succeed in ways Gears fails. If you completed both of those with your eyes closed, you'll find Gears a much sterner test.

World of Goo HD

£2.99 Its best incarnation yet so enjoy the sticky, surreal and fantastic experience  game. It isn't like any physics puzzler you've played before; instead, World of Goo drops you into a surreal, sometimes dark, often beautiful world that appears to have erupted fully formed from the mutant fusion of Tim Burton and Terry Gilliam The basic premise is simple use Goo Balls to create structures that lead to a pipe, whereupon remaining Goo is sucked up to Goo Heaven.

Initially, levels game's basic mechanics you can often explore levels and figure out what you need to do; if not, there's no penalty for experimenting and playing the same level numerous times.

Yes, this really is a weird game - but also a great one task you with building simple towers or bridges, but the concept has so much scope that, when combined with the evocative varied environments, you're regularly presented with something exciting and fresh.

You'll soon discover new kinds of Goo Ball - forcing you to rethink strategies - and many hazards, such as complex landscapes dangerous mechanical implenrents and various inhospitable weather conditions. It's surprisingly hard to get frustrated, despite the game offering relatively little help.

This is mostly down to smart level design - once you understand the
